Pregnancy Warning Signs: When Should You Contact Your Doctor Immediately?

Pregnancy Warning Signs

When Should You Contact Your Doctor Immediately?

Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it is also important to recognize symptoms that require prompt medical attention. While many changes during pregnancy are normal, some warning signs may indicate a serious problem for you or your baby.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, do not ignore them. Contact your obstetrician or visit the nearest emergency department immediately.

1. Vaginal Bleeding

Light spotting may occur in early pregnancy, but heavier bleeding should always be evaluated.

Seek immediate medical care if you experience:

  • Heavy bleeding

  • Passing blood clots

  • Severe abdominal pain with bleeding

  • Bleeding after the first trimester

Possible causes include miscarriage, placenta previa, placental abruption, or preterm labour.

2. Severe Abdominal Pain

Persistent or severe abdominal pain is not normal.

It may indicate:

  • Ectopic pregnancy (early pregnancy)

  • Placental abruption

  • Preterm labour

  • Appendicitis or other abdominal conditions

3. Decreased Baby Movements

After 28 weeks, you should become familiar with your baby's movement pattern.

Contact your doctor immediately if:

  • Baby movements are significantly reduced

  • You cannot feel your baby move despite resting and monitoring

Reduced fetal movement may indicate fetal distress and should never be ignored.

4. Water Breaking (Leakage of Fluid)

A sudden gush or continuous leakage of clear fluid may mean your water bag has ruptured.

Seek medical attention promptly, even if labour pains have not started.

5. Severe Headache or Blurred Vision

Persistent headache, blurred vision, flashing lights, or swelling of the face and hands may indicate pre-eclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication.

This requires immediate medical evaluation.

6. High Fever

A temperature above 38°C (100.4°F) should not be ignored.

Fever during pregnancy may be caused by infections that require prompt treatment.

7. Severe Swelling

Sudden swelling of:

  • Face

  • Hands

  • Feet

especially when accompanied by headache or high blood pressure, may indicate pre-eclampsia.

8. Painful Urination

Burning while passing urine, frequent urination with pain, fever, or back pain may suggest a urinary tract infection.

Early treatment helps prevent complications.

9. Persistent Vomiting

Morning sickness is common.

However, seek medical attention if:

  • You cannot keep food or fluids down

  • You become dizzy

  • Signs of dehydration develop

10. Labour Pains Before 37 Weeks

Regular contractions before 37 weeks may indicate preterm labour.

Early medical care can improve outcomes for both mother and baby.

When Should You Go to the Hospital Immediately?

Visit the nearest hospital immediately if you have:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Water breaking

  • Reduced baby movements

  • Convulsions or loss of consciousness

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Chest pain

  • Severe headache with blurred vision

  • High fever

  • Labour pains becoming regular

How Can You Reduce Pregnancy Risks?

Regular antenatal care helps detect many complications before they become serious.

Important steps include:

  • Attend all scheduled pregnancy check-ups.

  • Eat a balanced, nutritious diet.

  • Take prescribed prenatal vitamins and supplements.

  • Stay physically active as advised.

  • Monitor your baby's movements.

  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs.

  • Manage conditions such as diabetes and hypertension with your doctor's guidance.

Remember

Most pregnancies progress safely, but recognizing warning signs early can protect both mother and baby. If you are ever unsure about a symptom, it is safer to seek medical advice than to wait.

Early medical attention can make a significant difference.
